DOP TV: Why I Made Cuties: Maïmouna Doucouré Interview – The most controversial film of the year, pedophilia or young girls just twerking?

Writer-director Maïmouna Doucouré on her film CUTIES and how it draws from her own experience growing up between two cultures.

I really wish that she would have delivered this message in a documentary form. She should have interviewed celebrities about their perspectives on their younger audience and the influence that they have on them. Then interviewed 11-year-old girls about their perspectives on femininity and what it means to them. This was so poorly (or shall I say “brilliantly” since, congratulations, this movie is absolutely horrific) executed it’s just embarrassing for everyone involved. (Courtney Stewart)

As if today’s parents are oblivious to the volatility of children gaining access to social media and pornography? Any rational person can conclude that. Your, as you dub it, “art” has unapologetically sexually exploited children to deliver a “message” to whom, then? The movie has no real plot or catharsis, and it was full of ambiguous tones regarding child sexuality. If the message was actually intended to bring awareness to youth hyper-sexualization and not to glorify it, there would be no ambiguity because it’s not an open discussion; it’s wrong, and we know it’s wrong, period. Yet multiple scenes containing inconceivable acts done by these children were glorified in the film with “fun” pop music and disturbing close-ups of their private regions. And not to mention, these are real children. The utter collapse of humanity that is this film does a more effective job at normalizing child sexuality than at raising awareness of its existence and contributing factors.

“One day I saw some 11 year olds were dancing on stage, imindating sexualised things they’ve seen online” then why didn’t you stop it. This is not ART, you have used these poor girls. Ask them in twenty years how they feel. If you felt this needing exploring (for your art) an explotitive film like this was ill judged, you should have made a shock-documentory instead. I feel like you have compounded the issue with this 6-7 minute interview to dig yourself and Netflix out of this hole. For you own sake, stay away from “your art” of film-making. I am very disapointed in you and your associated child-hungry pedophile supporting produces/affiliates/streamers!
